The 90's

So the 90's were awesome.  Every so often I will wake up on a Sunday morning at around noon and roll over and go back to sleep for another two or three hours and then wake up again and think about just how awesome a decade that was for rock music.

The reason for this flashback to George Washington Middle School days (shout out to Ms. DeGrezia) is because I'm sick of hearing about "the song with the bee girl" when someone mentions Blind Melon, whom I believe to be one of the best acts of this decade.  (Cheers to all of the great bands of this era overshadowed by their mediocre hit singles.)

So in case you forgot or were under a rock, here's just a couple things that happened in the 90's:

Blind Melon's last major performance of Galaxie...

And of course...that very same year...THIS happened...

A year later came this lovely record...
The Cardigans - Choke

Dry and detached, and so guilt-freely double-dipping nuggets into the sauces of every species of music...that's why Cake's new record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200...

And then there was the greatest and most indie indie band of all time...

These artists set the bar for rock music in the 90's.  None of them were nearly as popular as their hit single, which forced them into a smelly, unsanitary public cesspool of one hit wonders (with the exceptions of Buckley, who was on the brink of becoming the most popular singer/songwriter on the planet before his death, and Fugazi, who, despite selling records out of their van, managed to squeeze their way into the Top 200 with End Hits.  Consider them the most respected independent band ever.)

Blog #3 is dedicated to THE BEES!

"The Isle of Wight is a county and the largest island of England, located in the English Channel, 3–5 miles (5–8 km) off the south coast of the county of Hampshire, separated from the mainland by a strait called the Solent. The Island is known for its natural beauty, its sailing based at the town of Cowes, and its resorts, which have been holiday destinations since Victorian times."

Thanks, Wikipedia.

Every time I introduce a friend to the splendor that is The Bees, they ask me where they're from and I begin to fabricate some magical land that I never seriously intended to believe existed myself.  Yet, according to the Wikipedia blast above, it does.  The Isle of Wight (pronounced "white"...officially.), the home of Bestival, the Isle of Wight International Jazz Festival, and at one time, 20-something species of dinosauuuuuuuuuuuuuur.................................is also the home of a band consisting of bees.

The Bees are one of those bands that somehow seamlessly maneuver through a colorful variety of styles.  Each record has a different vibe.  The songs featured on any particular record may smell similar, but they definitely don't all taste the same.  And they have yet to release an unimpressive record.  They've got so much soul, it makes for tough pickings... I couldn't choose any one song to post, so here's a handful of Bees for ya honey.  May I recommend not even wasting your time on these low-quality videos and get em off iTunes, or better yet, order their vinyl @ Recordstore.co.uk.

Word on the street is they're finally gonna play the States this year...

Love.

Blog #2: Does it get any more awesome??????

I woke up this glorious Saturday afternoon thinking about this band.  They opened for Primus last year at the Wellmont and because I wasn't there to witness it, they haunt my dreams every once in a while.  Nonetheless, I still wanna smoke drugs on their school bus...

We'll start here...

I found this the other night.  I love the Take Away Shows and I hope to one day play a tune for Mr. Moon.  But I'm a spectator above all.  I've spent far too much of my time burning CD's for friends of music I wanted them to hear.  I can't say I've ever really cared about whatever you were listening to.  I'm way more interested in getting you to hear what I want you to hear.  So sit still and listen.

I knowwww this is my very first glog, and I knowwww we haven't really formed a foundation of trust just yet.  But I promise in time you'll see I'm awfully consistent.  Check this here video, for instays...

This is actually the inspiration for this here frog.  I was watching this the other night.  I thought I'd seen all the Take Away Shows.  (Until now, Guillemots reined #1 with their performance of Made-Up Love Song #43, shot in some French stairwell.  Check it out.) But Andrew Bird's performance must've slipped through the klax.  I watched it several times and began sharing the wealth when I decided it'd be way easier to just post this shit up for you to dig.  This seemed an appropriate venue to deliver such musings.

So here it is.  My very first hog.  I'll be posting words, links, pictures, and the sounds of yesteryear as well as the contemporary artists that shake my soul.  But above all, this here glog is all about music.  It's about me finding awesome shit, and you reaping the benefits.  We'll start here...
